CHARITY SOAP BOX DERBY

SATURDAY THE 14TH OF DECEMBER BY CHAWENG LAKE

Usually when people think of KohSamui they’re thinking about hedonism: blue seas, skies and plenty of partying. But increasingly the island is getting a cachet for sporting activities. Following the Midnight Run & Triathlon, a new race is shortly to be inaugurated with the aim of it becoming a fixture: The KohSamui Soapbox Derby Music& Beer Festival.

The KohSamui Soapbox Derby Music & Beer Festival is organized by the THA and the staff working in the hotels on the island; it will be held every year in December to mark the end of the high season and all the hard work it entails. The main event is a 10- hour soap box relay race which will draw in the entire community. There will be big crowds and various music concerts and parties.

Over 5,000 people are expected to gather for the occasion; numbers expected will equal those of the Koh Samui Midnight Run; these races will both be the largest party events organized on the island. Approximately 2000 hotel staff will be  involved in the organization of the Soapbox Derby.

The participants will race in teams and will need to create and decorate their own soapboxes and have them ready well before the race. The soapboxes must also meet the strict criteria of race officials.

The race will consist  of a 2km circuit along Chaweng Lake and will last for a grueling 10 hours. It will start at midday on the 14th of December and finish at 10 PM at night. The participants will register in teams and will need to keep their soap box rolling along the buzzing, music-filled shores of Chaweng Lake. Concerts will be taking place throughout the race. The organizers are expecting a big crowd for this very first KohSamui Soapbox Derby Music & Beer Festival and hope to see the charity event become one of the most popular events on the island.

Racers are expected to come not just from Koh Samui but also from around Thailand. Participants are requested to decorate their soap box according to the theme they’ve chosen and to dress up accordingly. The event is expected to attract tourists, locals and those working for hotels that are sponsoring the event.

Ample media coverage is guaranteed and two charities will benefit: Koh Samui’s new School for Autistic Children and the Green Project supported by the Hotel Associations. Sponsors are welcome andneed to be on board by September 30th, 2013.

The Mayor of KohSamui together with the presidents of the THA and the TAKS, along with the PR team of Bangkok Airways and all the participating sponsors will be at the race to hand out trophies and awards to the winners.

The cost of participation is 25,000 Baht per soap box & per team. Payment can be made at Zazen Boutique Resort & Spa, Bophut beach (tel: 077 425 085) or New Star Beach Resort, ChawengNoi Beach (tel: 077 414 500).
